I did find a bit of this white putty stuff on the inside of the chest airbrake to keep it closed...otherwise it just flaps open
-
I know for sure, next time I see a yellowed out VF-1J for sale, I'm going for it
-
Look at that bottom light toasting one side of it LOL
-
This was the OTHER valk that was from the same seller at the same time...another $35 I can't find the oddities I found on the other one, at least yet. From the sunburn patterns, I would think THIS one was the fighter mode, and the pre-prod was the battroid version.
-
Since I can pretty much make up any story on it at all, since the real history is lost...I think I'll believe that these 2 were part of those early store-displays we saw posted online. It could explain why they are both yellowed as they were always on display. And some of the store displays had the macross kite on the right wing like this one. Bandai might have needed to get pairs of these things out, and the red letter wing flap versions was thrown into battroid mode to hide that error. I guess I could try and see if the yellow sunburns on the pair of valks indicates one pattern would be fighter and the other battroid. After a while someone just boxed it up and stuck in a box after a while, then decided to take it to a 2nd hand shop for some lunch money. Who would want a yellowed out pair of toys LOL Just a guess.

Finding the little differences is fun! The pre-prod clear plastic is frosted everywhere...even the wing lights
-
The article I referenced https://game.watch.impress.co.jp/docs/series/tamashii/1135339.html and the last pic there, with the same style wonky center thruster and the kite on the right wing

This set are the differences I've found so far vs a production unit I'm still looking at the 2nd unit I won in the auction...but it looks like the prod unit so far, just yellow.

I sort of fell ass-backwards into this one... Started with just a generic 1/48 DX VF-1J auction a few months ago, it was from a second hand shop. They had 2 for sale, both sunburned, $35 each. I figured I would get them, and throw a GBP set on them, and resell at the con for someone who was going to just keep it covered in the armor. A day before the con, I finally pulled the 2 out of the shipping box so I could get them prepped. I noticed the tail fin assembly from one was separated from the valk and wrapped separately...immediately was disappointed because the auction pics did not show this. Maybe I could wedge it in place or something. And this thing was just loose as hell...minor trim parts started popping off, fit for other parts like the legs was very poor. This was trouble. Anyways I started looking closer and noticed other things that showed weird abuse...like the canopy being frosted and not clear. Not sure how the sun could do that. Then something weird caught my eye... tampo 'no step' on the wing flaps was a different color (red vs black), and the tampo text was darker all over. I pulled a 3rd valk out, a normal prod vf-1j just to see what was going on and then started noticing all sorts of little differences. One really big difference was the Macross kite being on the right wing instead of the left-that just didn't make sense....wondered if maybe there were some early VF-1J production units that were defective...this was weird. Started to really dig now...wondered what else I might find. Popped the canopy...well it looks the same as the prod...hmm...oh wait...the heads up display is CLEAR on this weird valk...but blue on my prod. Ok..now this is getting fun. Flipped it over, and started checking for differences...the missile attachment points are not fully punched...and the red dot on the arms is larger and glossier red paint. Maybe the head has something. Yep! Different camera lens, and the triangle opening actually looks slightly larger! There is a missing finishing leading edge trim part in the intake, and the no-lift is red on the bottom of the wing flap. Opened the leg attachment are on the nose, and saw some additional dimples on this one, not on the prod. And leg screws were black and not silver. Lastly...the tail fin assembly. I've got this weird middle nozzle that just looks wonky..like a really bad fit. And the attachment point doesn't actually look broken-the edges are painted. We all think 'Woah...this a something undiscovered...some crazy prototype or test shot' or something along those lines. I needed to go back into time, and remembered the article on the pre-production version. Found it and looked and at the very bottom, there is my 'right wing macross kite' version. Then dug out the Figure King preview, and saw the same units again (its the same unit as the web page version), and saw a frosted canopy. So by sheer luck, I stumbled into a DX Pre-Production unit, with some very interesting variations, sold to a second hand shop. Here are some pics. Needless to say, it got pulled from the SDCon sale and will not be covered with the GBP armor anymore! First set here are the auction pictures.

Another awesome Con...had a lot of fun. Thanks to everyone for the sales that help keep the lights on here! I brought the "Wall of Takani" to the display area...just needed some strong magnets to keep the boxes up! The little note says 高荷義之 Yoshiyuki Takani This is MacrossWorld’s “Wall of Takani” display, dedicated to legendary artist Yoshiyuki Takani. What you see here is just a small selection of his incredible Macross Box Art. He was responsible for all the Nichimo Box Art (the entire Nichimo collection shown here), and roughly half of the Arii and Imai kits. His work inspired many to become Macross fans, myself included. The VF-1J GBP you see to the right directly drove Tenjin to become our next generation go-to Macross artist. Look at Tenjin’s recent art see his respect to the Takani Style. Even the Bandai DX 1/48 GBP toy has the oversized hands included which were a direct nod to the Takani Box Art. -
Amazing!! Imagine being their neighbor and looking out the window and someone creating jets and tanks and helicopters in their back yard Look forward to seeing more, please post as it progresses if you can.

MacrossWorld will be on display in the Exhibit hall this year...come see the "Wall of Takani" in person! Will bring many other fun treats as well (for the newer folks, Yoshiyuki Takani did all the Box Art for the entire Nichimo line of kits shown here, and also about half the Imai and Arii model kits from 82-84) -
Its about FREAKING TIME...I was this close to just making my own and self printing something. https://tower.jp/article/feature_item/2022/09/02/3002 If you can't wait 5 more months for the book, come see the "Wall of Takani" in person at the upcoming SDCON in Torrance on Sep 17th!

Not really any new info, but thought it was an interesting read ...found on an old hard drive ****************** Subject: Re: Slightly off-topic: Jetfire Commercial From: "mercheant" mercheant@earthlink.net" Date: 1/26/00 12:25 AM Pacific Standard Time hello all... I've been lurking in this newgroup forever; thought I would add my two-cents to this thread... Takatoku Toys sculpted the orginal prototype for the classic 1/55 scale Macross Valkyries; these toys, among others, were released throughout the original Macross series television run. Although the Takatoku toy lines from this series sold well and were wildly popular, Takatoku was in serious financial trouble. Once the series ended its run, Takatoku sold the molds and the rights to produce the Valkyries to the Matsushiro Company. Matsushiro had plans to release another line of Valkyries, but it too had financial problems. In hopes to produce a quick profit, Matsushiro sold a small run of Valkyries to Hasbro. This Valkyrie type was a basic Takatoku VF-1 with the obvious color changes- ie, red armour, red and black paint, etc. The only design difference was the trimmed nose. Hasbro requested this change to appease their concerns that the sharp tip of the orginal design might not be safe for young children. Stop your laughing!! ANywAy, I've gotten ahead of myself... Why would Hasbro need the Jetfire line of Transformers? The answer is, oddly, Bandai, Co. Hasbro was lagging behind in the transforming craze that was sweeping North America. Bandai had its dismal, but popular, Go-Bots line. This series and toys were selling quite well, though both were of low quality. Hasbro was planning to dominate the market with its upcoming Transformers lineup. Transformers had been released in the U.S. and were selling somewhat well; Hasbro was planning a larger toy release with the syndication of the original Transformers television series. However, Hasbro was afraid that the lineup of toys did not include very many large protaganists... outside of Optimus Prime, the good guys were much smaller than those baddies, the Decepticons. This was due, of course, to the fact that the Autobots were almost all cars, and Decepticons were mainly flight capable machines- planes, etc. ('cept a very large Megatron, hehe). The attempt to have a some sort of scale created this problem. Hasbro quieted this concern by including the lone Autobot who was a plane, Jetfire. With the popularity and quality of the Macross toys, the resemblance to American F-16's, and its large size, Hasbro felt confident it would compete well with the Bandai lineup of toys. At this same time, Bandai of Japan had just finished talks to develop toys for the in-development Macross film. The Valkyrie molds were once again sold to another company; this time from Matsushiro to Bandai. Bandai gave Takatokus' original design a facelift to match the DYRL? Valkyries, and sculpted a few added items: StrikeValkyrie armour, and the awesome VE-1 and SuperOstrich. The two new Valks came from the Matsushiro desgn- dull noses fit well into the frame of two ships not meant for heavy combat. BUT! When Bandai acquired the Matsushiro mold rights, they had to honor the contracts previously made with Hasbro. The Transformers series had exploded and Hasbro needed stock... Bandai finished the agreement to make the Jetfires, although the second line had Bandai inscribed on them. This is when the majority of the standard Jetfires were made. BTW, the back stock of Matsushiros that Bandai acquired simply had a black foil sticker placed over the Matsushiro name. Some of the Matsushiros were not assembled- this is why some Matsushiros appear to be standard Bandai, with the exception of the foil sticker. (God don't remove it... unless you want to hurt value). The Matsushiro was only released in the U.S., the standard Jetfire was released throughout the world. Ugh, much too much info... mercheant Obforgot: Jetfire was referred to as Skyfire in the original series, and looked nothing like the Valkyrie. I know nothing of other TF series...

I realized tonight that we are currently as far away from the Bandai 2002 Valkyrie Releases, as the 2002 Valkyrie Releases were from the original Macross airing 1982 > 2002 > 2022 Just a bit freaky
