Archer Posted April 27, 2012 Posted April 27, 2012 Those are REALLY REALLY cool actually. It's shocking to see such accurate models made out of Legos, especially designs like the sv-51 and yf-19 Quote
UN Spacy Posted April 27, 2012 Posted April 27, 2012 Great find. Who raided the Hory Froating Head's office? Quote
Chronocidal Posted April 27, 2012 Posted April 27, 2012 Those small scale ones are pretty darn awesome actually. It's a great way to get past the issues bigger models have. I'm currently working on something with the Digital Designer program, but it's got a long way to go. It's basically a double-scaled version of the Yamato VF-19, right down to the internal mechanisms. No idea if it will ever work in real life though, because the types of hinges I might need might not even exist. Quote
paramat Posted April 28, 2012 Author Posted April 28, 2012 (edited) Lots of models at the Macross LEGO Flickr group http://www.flickr.co...crosslego/pool/ Occasionally Macross LEGO is posted in the LEGO manga & anime group, such as this cute Zentradi / Gerwalk encounter http://www.flickr.co...legomanga/pool/ Those microscale VF-25s are excellent. paramat Posted May 8, 2012 Author Posted May 8, 2012 (edited) This was posted some years ago in this forum but for completeness here is the other LEGO VF-25 with construction photos http://kaisun1192.bl...-entry-933.html Edited May 12, 2012 by paramat Quote
Fly4victory Posted May 11, 2012 Posted May 11, 2012 the types of hinges I might need might not even exist. The best joints are from the bionicals and some of the technic bricks/pins. Quote
Chronocidal Posted May 11, 2012 Posted May 11, 2012 (edited) The best joints are from the bionicals and some of the technic bricks/pins. Actually, not even close. They're great for smaller scales, but if you start getting anything bigger than a 1/60 valk, and they won't support anything. Especially the ball joints, since those have about the same staying power as a Bandai DX ball joint. Legos are just heavy. The problem is, Lego doesn't make any joints with any sort of tension in the form that I need them... specifically, they don't make any strong turn-table style joints.. the kind of thing you could mount hips or shoulders to. Edited May 11, 2012 by Chronocidal Quote
Fly4victory Posted May 12, 2012 Posted May 12, 2012 (edited) Larger than 1/60. Try bionical ball joints wrapped in cling wrap. The cling wrap will give out over time but they work. Got the idea from a variable VF-1A that was about 1/48, it had cut up bionical joints to make what was needed for the shoulders and hips. Yes for the purist cutting is taboo but oh well. Not my idea and I didn't think it would work either. edit: solved the Engrish problems Edited May 12, 2012 by Fly4victory Quote
Fly4victory Posted May 12, 2012 Posted May 12, 2012 http://www.foundrydx.com/joints2.html Here is a good source for joints. Quote
paramat Posted May 12, 2012 Author Posted May 12, 2012 (edited) Thanks for the link. The LEGO AT-AT used large leg joints comprised of these 2 parts: http://www.bricklink...tem.asp?P=44225 http://www.bricklink...tem.asp?P=44224 Edited May 13, 2012 by paramat Quote
Chronocidal Posted May 13, 2012 Posted May 13, 2012 (edited) Mhm, I've got a couple dozen of those. Sadly, they're entirely the wrong shape to be of any use for hips or shoulders. I've used them for knees, and they work decently, but the odd shape is really limiting. What I really need is something that uses that exact pivot design, but with the studs attached to the faces of the disks, allowing you to make a simple rotating joint. I could still use something like that for knees as well, but the built-in lever arms really restrict where you can use those. Edited May 13, 2012 by Chronocidal Quote
paramat Posted July 26, 2012 Author Posted July 26, 2012 (edited) I just found this transforming mini YF-19. http://imgbbs.bricks...25910I9Wae&p=16 Edited July 26, 2012 by paramat Quote
ps99042 Posted July 26, 2012 Posted July 26, 2012 Check this one out. It's on the official LEGO Cuusoo site with potential to become a real set though with the all the licensing issues I'm sure that's not the case. http://lego.cuusoo.com/ideas/view/638 Quote
Metal_Massacre_79 Posted August 5, 2012 Posted August 5, 2012 (edited) I just found this transforming mini YF-19. http://imgbbs.bricks...25910I9Wae&p=16 In anyone's interested, I've reconstructed this model using Lego's Digital designer, and I have a parts list. I just priced it out using Lego's Pick-A-Brick option and it costs around $40. There are two parts that are not available on Lego's site right now though. They should be easy enough to find. One problem I had with LDD was that I could not position the arms to properly locate the shield but I think it can be done with the physical parts. EDIT: I found a way to position the arms, and I was able to transform it directly in LDD. Edited August 5, 2012 by Metal_Massacre_79 Quote
Renato Posted March 20, 2013 Posted March 20, 2013 I found this so I dug up the most recent Lego-themed thread I could find. It's an incredible, awesome thing of beauty: Quote
CoreyD Posted March 20, 2013 Posted March 20, 2013 When I first saw that SDF-1 I thought it was the WAVE version (looks similar)...then I realized it was something much much more awesome. Quote
Scyla Posted March 20, 2013 Posted March 20, 2013 I had the same feeling. At first glance I thought it was a custom made Yamato kit but this is wicked cool stuff. Quote
Knight26 Posted March 20, 2013 Posted March 20, 2013 That is freaking gorgeous, I would love to see the plans to build one Quote
CF18 Posted March 21, 2013 Posted March 21, 2013 Meh on the SDF-1. Sure it looks nice, but with some many hand modified pieces it is more of a scratch build model. Quote
ah_t00t Posted March 21, 2013 Posted March 21, 2013 I dunno how long it took him to bulid this, just wowed me away!!! If he added some lights to illuminate this...... i think i will be on my knees asking him how much is he selling it lol!!! Quote

Beltane70 Posted May 23, 2013 Posted May 23, 2013 Meh on the SDF-1. Sure it looks nice, but with some many hand modified pieces it is more of a scratch build model. Other than the four thin parts that extend from the bow, I didn't see any other parts that I haven't seen in any current Lego set. Either way, it's still awesome and something that I've been wanting to make for years! Quote
paramat Posted May 25, 2013 Author Posted May 25, 2013 (edited) I found this impressive transforming VF 25 on the Flickr Macross LEGO pool. http://www.flickr.com/photos/58766720@N05/sets/ In the photo set he has super packs as well. Edited May 25, 2013 by paramat Quote
treatment Posted May 27, 2013 Posted May 27, 2013 Ok, guys. Somebody tell BigWest and/or Mr.K we totally need a life-size VF-1 now just to out-awesome this: http://newsfeed.time.com/2013/05/23/the-46000-pound-x-wing-how-lego-built-the-worlds-biggest-star-wars-toy/ Quote
Kelsain Posted May 27, 2013 Posted May 27, 2013 Clearly, it would need to be fully transformable too. Quote
