Kurisama Posted January 20, 2012 Posted January 20, 2012 Hey everyone! I've always wanted to see a VF-11 in the Skull Focker special colours - so having recently got a 11C on sale from HLJ - and some time on my hands before I really start work for the year; thought I'd give it a go! I'm still very much a noob in terms of masking and painting and what not - but I love to do it, and well, I need something to do until I can get back to making my custom 1/60 Q.Rau! Second pic is a quick photoshop to show where the black and yellow markings will go. Shield is the only thing 100% finished. Using Tamiya "Camel Yellow", as it looks to be the closest to Focker-yellow I can find at my local hobby shop. Using some decals from my old 1/72 VF-0S kit. What do u guys think? Quote
Jasonc Posted January 20, 2012 Posted January 20, 2012 Looks great. I did notice that the yellow is bleeding through the kite symbol on the wing though. Other than that, looks great. Can't wait to see the toy complete in some good poses. Quote

Kelsain Posted January 20, 2012 Posted January 20, 2012 You're gonna paint over the pink on the head, right? Looks awesome - great idea! Quote
Kurisama Posted January 20, 2012 Author Posted January 20, 2012 ^ Of course! Question is... yellow or black? And what about the 4 little pink triangles? Quote
Jasonc Posted January 20, 2012 Posted January 20, 2012 I should mention that that is the masking tape to mark out where the black lines will be! Sorry! Oh, duh. I shoulda looked closer at them. Carry On. Quote
Kurisama Posted January 20, 2012 Author Posted January 20, 2012 (edited) Update! Now a long and difficult wait until I can get some Mr.Hobby UV cut matte clear coat... Dammit! I just wanna peel all the tape off and attach it to the main body! Edited January 20, 2012 by Kurisama Quote
caslon Posted January 20, 2012 Posted January 20, 2012 I love this color scheme! Another custom plane for Roy? Quote
nightmareB4macross Posted January 20, 2012 Posted January 20, 2012 Kurisama, Most excellent idea. Can't wait for the final execution. Just a recommendation...How about a black heatshield instead of all white? It would make the skull insignia stand out. Quote
Kurisama Posted January 20, 2012 Author Posted January 20, 2012 You mean on the chest? I was thinking about that - but not only would the paint easily scrape off in the very tight squeeze, even with several layers of clear coat (decal in photo has already scraped off) - I'd also have to figure a way to disassemble the nose of the cone to get the 2 parts out on their on for ease of painting - but i can't seem to get it open, mind you I've only had a few mins look at the assembly... Kelsain Posted January 20, 2012 Posted January 20, 2012 There's the combat grade paint being discussed in another thread, but I don't know if anyone's tried it yet. (null) Quote

Careful with disassembly, as parts like the screw covers and the two halves are glued together. Quote
Kurisama Posted January 21, 2012 Author Posted January 21, 2012 There's the combat grade paint being discussed in another thread, but I don't know if anyone's tried it yet. Oh really? Can u point me towards that thread? Careful with disassembly, as parts like the screw covers and the two halves are glued together. Yeah... may have to give the heat shield a pass for the moment - either wait until someone else has done it and see how they did it or wait till I build up the confidence and skill to pry it apart myself In other news - wing stripes painted and clear coated today as well as the other leg fins. I ran out of white '301' transfers - so should I put together my own 301 from the individual numbers on the decal sheet or slap a white UN SPACEY in the right wing stripe? Quote
Kelsain Posted January 21, 2012 Posted January 21, 2012 Oh really? Can u point me towards that thread? Not sure how to link to another thread, but it's 3 or 4 topics down from yours. It's titled "Combat Grade Paint." They've been discussing the use of gun paint on the Yammie VF-1 kits. Quote
Kurisama Posted January 21, 2012 Author Posted January 21, 2012 Thanks Kelsain! Ok, next round of pics! I used the trimmed kite logo sticker from the 1/60 sheet to mask the original tampo print logo. Wing lines are 2 coats of tamiya matte black plus a coat of clear gloss, and the skull squad decals on the vertical stabilizer needs a coat of clear matte. Quote
Kurisama Posted January 21, 2012 Author Posted January 21, 2012 (edited) Decal update. Wondering if I should add the jolly roger on the inner vert stabilizers like on the VF-0S? Looks a bit plain to me. Thoughts on looking at this more refined scheme - perhaps make the tips of the main wings yellow also? Another brain fart; add a black stripe to go down the main leg part ala VF-0/1? EDIT: I really hate the M7 pilots - anyone out there wanna swap me an Isamu from the 11B? Pretty please? Edited January 21, 2012 by Kurisama Quote
Kelsain Posted January 21, 2012 Posted January 21, 2012 I don't think you need the Roger on the inside surfaces. I do think some bla would look good on the leg. Strip would work. Or outline the side panel, like the red on the 11b? (null) Quote
miriya Posted January 21, 2012 Posted January 21, 2012 This is looking fantastic! What color yellow is that? Camel yellow? Quote

Mog Posted January 21, 2012 Posted January 21, 2012 Very awesome work!! It's always very cool to see someone pull off a non-VF-1 custom. Regarding the stripe on the leg, how about using just a black "UN SPACY" sticker/decal instead? It would be a nice and logical detail to add, would break up the all-white look, and would be a little less obvious than a black stripe. In any case, great work!! Quote
Kurisama Posted January 21, 2012 Author Posted January 21, 2012 Thanks Mog! Yeah - you're right - black UN Spacey decal would work best. Looking at my 1/72 VF-11, looks like the pilot is almost the same size as the 1/60 pilot... Excellent Also, I think I may go all out and place all the non-grey (low-viz?) decals from the 1/72 kit on this custom. I think that'll look rad. Quote
Jinnai Posted January 24, 2012 Posted January 24, 2012 Sorry it took me so long to visit this. I can't wait to see this next time I visit. Want me to paint your pilot? Quote
Graham Posted January 24, 2012 Posted January 24, 2012 Very cool custom. I like it a lot. Graham Quote
Kurisama Posted January 24, 2012 Author Posted January 24, 2012 Sorry it took me so long to visit this. I can't wait to see this next time I visit. Want me to paint your pilot? Of course dude! Lemmie assemble the 1/72 pilot and see how he fits, if no special mods need to be made - can u paint and assemble one of ur spare 1/72 pilots from the VF-11 kit and post it? You shouls see the yammie collection now - got a VF-22S in the mail yesterday - gotta say, least fave valk and not very impressed with it... Very cool custom. I like it a lot. Graham Thanks Graham, going to tackle some more decals and panel lines over the next few days - painting the rest of the yellow areas is a no go for the moment - been raining like nobodies business for a few days now - today is especially torrential. Glad everyone here digs it! Quote

Mommar Posted January 24, 2012 Posted January 24, 2012 This is a cool looking custom. I have zero painting/art skills or else I would have attempted an YF-11 Max style color scheme on one of my VF-11C's. Quote

I have zero painting/art skills or else I would have attempted an YF-11 Max style color scheme on one of my VF-11C's. Thanks Mommar - yeah, I've always thought the VF-11's were ripe for customizing! Or would you like me to mail a spare 1/48 Isamu from the YF-19 kit and see if that fits? I just checked the 1/72 pilot in there - he looks a tad too small, and I'd have to reposition the legs to fit - even just a head swap wouldn't work. Sure, send thru the 1/48 pilot! Can't hurt Now for a tiny update, started adding some 1/72 decals: Quote
Kurisama Posted January 25, 2012 Author Posted January 25, 2012 Cheers pfunk! Not so much progress pics - just what the legs look like attached I love how it looks like a delta wing when the wings sweep back! Quote
Kelsain Posted January 25, 2012 Posted January 25, 2012 I like how the wing stripes go perpendicular when swept back! (null) Quote
Kurisama Posted January 27, 2012 Author Posted January 27, 2012 I think I done F'd up... Got impatient and bought Tamiya clear matte coat, coated fast packs and decaled/panel-lined legs... then boom - started to get cloudy - not noticeable on the vast amounts of white but on the jolly roger and other black areas.... epic sad face. It's also a little cold and rainy still, but I painted inside the garage, please tell me this is just a passing phase and when it cures or gets a full dry in the sun it'll come good? Quote
nightmareB4macross Posted January 27, 2012 Posted January 27, 2012 The cold weather is where the problem lies. Usually cold humid weather will give cloudy (sad face results). Sometimes using a heater can help clear this up, but if doesn't...well you know what you've got to do. Good Luck. Quote
