wolfx Posted January 8, 2007 Posted January 8, 2007 Just started with this series and up till episode 5. Characters are designed by CLAMP but otherwise it seems to be a Bandai Sunrise original. Pretty enjoyable so far. Its based on an alternate reality where the Britania (British) Empire is expanding its empire. Its latest invasinon, Japan. The invadees' country's names are changed into numbers (Japan was called 11 after the invasion) and all invadees are treated as 2nd class citizens compared to the Britanians. So there you have the typical setting. The main character's name is Le Louch...yeah that made me go wtf as well. Think of him as an idealistic person who wants the world to be a better place, just like Kira from Death Note. He later gets the ability to mind control people to do as he says. He's a manipulative super genius. Ok...just think of him as Kira with an extra can of bad ass-ness. Then there's his friend Suzaku who's the pessimist mecha pilot, who through a bunch of circumstances finds himself piloting the uber new mech , Lancelot, which IMHO looks quite similar to the Nirvash Zero. So far so good. I'm liking the anime. It feels alot like Death Note + mecha. Characters are made up of twig skinny bishies and women.....but if you can get over the CLAMP style....you're in for a ride. Quote
JELEINEN Posted January 8, 2007 Posted January 8, 2007 This show would have been great if they didn't keep trying to tack the high school comedy bits to it. They go from a grim scene of women and children being gunned down by the oppressive government, then jump back to campus where wacky hijinks ensue. Now, if done right, this could be very effective in screwing with the audiences heads, but it wasn't played that way. It just comes across as if they threw two genres together without any regard to the end result. What's sad is that the show had real potential. The juxtapostion of the two main leads is very interesting and could have made for some great drama. The other thing that really bugs me is... THE WORD "GEAS" IS SPELLED WITH ONLY ONE "S" Yeesh. Oh, and do you think that Pizza Hut might have paid for this show? Quote
wolfx Posted January 9, 2007 Author Posted January 9, 2007 (edited) I thought the school scenes were kinda there for dramatic effect...like 30 minutes away from the school, people were being killed mercilessly while in the school itself, the brats are thinking about school stuff like what to eat for lunch and all that, obviously oblivious to the stuff happening in the real world outside. Kinda like FMP i guess. What does the word "geass" mean anyway? My subs have it in Geass, double S. And yes it seems to be the case...pizzahut product placements everywhere. Kinda like FMP i guess. That would be great, if they could pull it off. Unfortunately, they haven't been able to, so it just comes across as them tacking the school stuff on because high school comedies are popular right now. What does the word "geass" mean anyway? My subs have it in Geass, double S. A geas is a a vow, obligation or doom placed on someone (it comes from gaelic mythology). Lelouch's power is to put a geas on people. The Japanese producers used the mis-spelling, which doesn't excuse the fansubbers from expounding on it. And yes it seems to be the case...pizzahut product placements everywhere. It got ridiculous. Sticking the occasional billboard or such in the background is one thing, but when product placement starts intruding on the dialog, it's too much. Quote

I probably have to watch more but so far up till episode 5 i think it was pretty balanced. The highschool comedies are minimal....at least until Suzaku joins the school i think that's when it will go up a notch. JELEINEN Posted January 9, 2007 Posted January 9, 2007 Ah...so a geas is something like a curse then. It can be, but destiny might be a bit more accurate. As for the show, have you seen the cat chase episode yet? That one is where I stopped watching it at. Quote
rikiryou Posted January 9, 2007 Posted January 9, 2007 Hmm, best not to stop there, up till episode 11 now, and it's pretty nifty stuff. I'm pretty surprised why you can be so irked at the silly stuff. True they're useless most of the time, but overlooking them, everything else is pretty darn enjoyable. Especially when the school life scenes are so short-lived; for example something in school's just going to happen, and they switch back to the main plot, sometimes albeit too abruptly. Nevertheless, just forget about that cat episode (although I found Lelouch's expression pretty damn hilarious) and watch the rest. Loads of nifty action and whatnot. Quote
F-ZeroOne Posted January 9, 2007 Posted January 9, 2007 Wonderful. Now the Japanese think we're evil as well as Hollywood. Quote

wolfx Posted January 10, 2007 Author Posted January 10, 2007 I got past the cat episode which was pretty funny but not as bad as Jeleinen put it. The episode after that....civilians were ruthlessly killed and Le Louch shows his genius again. Awesome. Quote
motley Posted January 10, 2007 Posted January 10, 2007 i've watched up to episode 8 so far, and i'm really enjoying it. its a bit melodramatic, but this is anime after all. i really like the twist of the uber mecha being exclusively on the bad guy's side, even if its pilot is a good friend of the hero. i realize the the black knights are going to get an uber mech of their own soon, but it's much less the traditional hero styled robot than lancelot. i'm not sure why the opening theme is so popular on youtube though, i find it pretty annoying. i like the ending theme though, reminds me of the opening to noir (the only thing really worth remembering about noir), i think its done by the same group. The opening theme reminds me of Eureka 7's 1s OP. And you're right, the ED is by Ali Project, the same people who did the Noir OP (Kopperia No Hitsugi) with their weird minor keys and melodies. Quote
chrono Posted January 10, 2007 Posted January 10, 2007 *rubs his temples after watching the first episode* I wish there was a painless way to remove the memory of watching this. It comes off as a flat out cliche mixture of Gundam and Clamps 'X' via typical school emo-ism & wannbe yaoi. I really don't know whats worse about this the ugly mecha & mechnical designs or the cliche shonen plot via Clamps 'X'. Flat-out UGH! I've gotta pass this one by just to keep my sanity. Would've had potential if they didn't have the Brainac with a SuperPower.... Oh and it seems that they are using 'geas' in the "to compel, obedience" form that D&D used as a spell. Quote
F-ZeroOne Posted January 10, 2007 Posted January 10, 2007 You mean you're not? And just dump those orphans into the shark tank, will you, Smithers - ah, oh, hello. Sorry, caught me while I was a bit distracted. No, we're not evil at all, old chap. Quote
ShadowerV2 Posted January 10, 2007 Posted January 10, 2007 The opening theme reminds me of Eureka 7's 1s OP. That's because it was done by the same people. Flow did Days for Eureka 7 and now they did Colours for Le Louch. Quote
wolfx Posted January 11, 2007 Author Posted January 11, 2007 Ahhh thanks for that shadower. I should've known. Episode 11 now and all i can say is.....WOAH..... The Guren MKii is a hax....looks somewhat like EVA02. The whole battle in episodes 10 and 11 were jaw dropping. Episode 12 coming up....then after that i'll have to wait weekly like the rest of the people. Quote
rikiryou Posted January 13, 2007 Posted January 13, 2007 Ooo the end of ep 12 is gooood. Half-saw that coming though . Too bad for Shirley. And Nina's pretty freaky. Lord knows wth she was doing in the dark. Can't wait for the subs for ep 13, getting the raw instead now. Heheh. Quote

And about time Le Louch got down from his high horse. Quote
rikiryou Posted January 13, 2007 Posted January 13, 2007 Argh, cliff hanger in ep 13. Suzaku is really getting on my nerves, he's just so freakin annoying. Shame he didn't stay nuts. Quote

wolfx Posted January 15, 2007 Author Posted January 15, 2007 Shirley is so gonna get Geassed next ep. Le Louch is so walking down the path of Kira. (Death Note...not GUndam Seed) Quote
rikiryou Posted January 15, 2007 Posted January 15, 2007 Lol if Lelouch turns to Kira from SEED I'm gonna shoot myself. XD But yeah, Shirley is surely to get Geass'ed, haha. Unless something else happens. Damn you still-picture preview! Quote
wolfx Posted February 2, 2007 Author Posted February 2, 2007 Episode 15......all i can say is, one scene totally took me by surprise, and admitedly i had to rewind not once but twice. Am i really watching something by Bandai Sunrise? Great episode. I find it strange that Le Louch really went with erasing himself from Shirley's memories. He has to convince alot of people that he's having a childish argument with Shirley and this method has just too many loopholes that can make ppl feel something is amiss. What if there's more than those pictures and that diary that Shirley has of Le Louch? What if someone asks her about him? CC seems to like cosplaying. Even in next episode preview, she's in a new getup, spectacled stewardress? Quote
chrono Posted February 2, 2007 Posted February 2, 2007 Ok after the first 2-3 episodes the show starts to take on a substance that is interesting with ep 4 being the key. Right now I'm at the 12th episode and it's become surprisingly and nicely complex, not really sitting in one place or on one person for to long. I'd have to say the last 3 episode arc has added well to the character and plot complexities. Though I do have to say after episode 8 the art quality has become 'iffy' with 8.5 being a VERY questionable move will cause problems down the line. Hopefully the current 'humanizing' arc doesn't last long nor the Cornelia story story arc and little miss corner humper needs 'offed' and badly, but I've a bad feeling that she'll be around till the end... Quote
wolfx Posted February 2, 2007 Author Posted February 2, 2007 After episode 15 which is testing the boundaries of anime porn....i'm quite sure someone's gonna sleep with someone in the course of the story. Euphie and Nina? Lulu and CC? Suzaku and Shirley? Hmmm Quote
F360° Posted February 2, 2007 Posted February 2, 2007 erh, i'm pretty sure I know what you're talking about, but since it's Bandai Sunrise, i'm 100% it's ok. I saw enough of those in their Gundam series. I like this anime, it's on the top of my list of anime to keep watching every week. But man, does the new intro song suck donkey poo. Quote

I saw enough of those in their Gundam series. Uhh....were there bewbies in gundam series? Cuz i dun seem to remember or were they so horrendous that I mentally blocked them from my mind. Sunrise always had fanservice but not so blatant that it almost borders on pr0n, that was what surprised me with Geass. Anyway Viletta FTW! Quote
rikiryou Posted February 2, 2007 Posted February 2, 2007 I dunno what Gundam you were watching, but they had quite some bewbs. See Zeta, Victory and Turn A for some. Though I dunno what you mean by Geass making it look like pr0n. She just woke up from bed nude, that's not so strange. Quote

Ok ok...i blame my ignorance then cuz i haven't finished zeta and dun think i'll bother with Victory and Turn A. I've seen Stardust Memory, War in Pocket, 8th MS Team Wing and Seed and they had no bewbs. Cuz i reckoned Bandai SUnrise stuff always take the prime time TV slots so to adhere to censorship they don't show nudity. Well...cuz usually you'll get strategically placed object covering unmentionables in anime, and though you'd expect bewbs from GAINAX and sometimes J.C Staff, i never expected it from Bandai Sunrise. The mastubatory scene of Nina using the corner of the table was a lot less innocent than the boob 'fan'-service. Are pizza, mecha and story not enough to keep people interested? Quote
rikiryou Posted February 2, 2007 Posted February 2, 2007 Lol yeah Nina's shadow scene is freakeh, I forgot about that already, lol. Oh noes, not gonna bother with Turn A? But it's such a nice show to watch. Bewbies in Sunrise isn't that prominent I guess. Off the top of my head I can think of City Hunter, Votoms, one of the Cyber Formula OVAs which had a nekkid shower scene, the infamous Brain Powerd's opening, and more recently the Mai series I think? Yeah, come to think of it they're rather subtle with their eroticism for the majority of their works. Quote

Well bewb shots aside, i want a cheese-kun now. Damn you CC for looking cute with one! Quote
rikiryou Posted February 3, 2007 Posted February 3, 2007 Maybe Pizza Hut will release some special meal with a cheese-kun, lol. And wth @ ep 16. But Lelouch's reaction at the end was pretty freaky + don't really hate Suzaku that much now, haha. I hope he toughens up after this or remains insane. Probably won't though. Quote
chrono Posted February 3, 2007 Posted February 3, 2007 The new OP is abit funny(lol style). And reminds me of when I told people on this board(during the E7 series) that multiple OP's and ED's were gonna become standard. I'm also starting to like the amount of politico stuff and death of innocence running in the series. Quote
wolfx Posted February 8, 2007 Author Posted February 8, 2007 Episode 16 Hoooly poo......Suzaku = supermaN! And how awesome was that chess game....so awesome! Le Louch sorta pulled a Kira in this episode too didn't he? Safe to say, Code Geass is my fave series EVAR. Quote
