I don't have much of a collection also, but it does have some interesting stuff. Here's what I was able to get easily from my office. What is not shown is the original Macross Manga in color, the Frontier Manga, anything Robotech related, Macross II RPG books, and Macross 7 Trash manga, Macross Ace, or Macross Chronicles. Here's just the meat of what I have:

Wow, very impressive. I think the Kazutaka Design Works will be next on my list. Is it worth the cost? <_<

Thanks for the compliment. I left out some other stuff that I will take pix of later, but as far as the Kazutaka book, It's an awesome book. The lineart, and designs in that book always impress me, no matter how many times I look through it. It's an expensive book, but one I believe shouldn't be out of any Macross fans collection. I've been trying to collect other books, so anyone with a collection, post them up with pix. Just like the poster thread, this is a very cool thread.

Its basically everything you need to know about DYRL...and then about 300 things you never really thought to ask. Everything from mechanical designs showcasing how the Valkyries, SDF-1, Zentraedi, Meltrandi, etc. were "updated" into their motion picture versions...to very nice character redesigns that are subtle, but actually make you take notice (Misa's hairstyle is completely different in DYRL than in SDFM, for example)...and some redesigns that smack you in the face like an angry pimp (Britai and Exedol, for example). As I have mentioned in the "1/2000 DYRL Macross" thread, the pre-crash Meltran Destroyer that eventually becomes the DYRL version of the SDF-1 is showcased, but was never actually shown in the movie. Max is shown in his "macronized" state (40-odd feet tall) wearing what appears to be a Meltran dress uniform and cloak instead of the Q-Rau flightsuit...er, no pun intended with the "dress" comment there. Squadrons stationed aboard the Macross are covered in the text, and its interesting that besides Skull, there was Angel, Apollo and Diamond (perhaps where Diamond Squadron came from in M7?). Oddly, there seems to be no mention of Vermillion in the DYRL book. I mean its just got line art out the wazoo! Its chock-full of stuff like that...completely useless information that, at the same time, plugs in answers where there were none from just watching the movie itself. lol

Oh...and the first entire third of the book is nearly a cel-by-cel full-color print of the movie itself...I kid you not.

Over the years, I've had Japanese friends teach me what they could here and there to read SOME Japanese, but let's face it...I'm not exactly the Rosetta Stone when it comes to translating the Gold Book. So as a result, I continue to learn new stuff about DYRL from this book, and I've had the damned thing since 1988! But that's one of the things that keeps the book fresh for me IMHO. If you're thinking of snagging a Gold Book, be warned that the average price for one in decent condition can cost anywhere from $200 to $500, depending on how scrupulous or greedy the seller is. But is is worth it? You betcha! The book hasn't been in print in nearly 2 decades, and will probably never see a reprinting...so its actually a little piece of Macross history in that respect.

...Haruhiko Mikimoto, the guy is a total genius!! B))

Agreed. For those who credit Shoji Kawamori with being the One-True-God-of-Macross...not so fast. Mikimoto is the one responsible for most, if not all of the character designs for both the TV series, DYRL and Flashback 2012. He refined many of his main characters for DYRL (compare the two Minmays and you'll definitely see a maturing of artistic style) and further tweaked them for Flashback. Flashback Hikaru looks like a completely different character altogether and a thirtysomething Minmay remembering her "heyday" as a galactic pop princess gives her an edge she never had before. But that whole scene was surreal anyway. There was "older" Minmay leaving aboard the Megaroad...while "younger" Minmay was watching the ship leave orbit with the crowds of people. And to thoroughly confuse the viewer...older Minmay waves goodbye to young Minmay. Years later I understood that it was supposed to be a metaphor for Minmay saying goodbye to her young immature self and accepting her role as "savior of humanity," but at the time, it was just strange to watch.

But I digress...

Good review. There's also: http://www.macrossworld.com/macross/books/dyrl_databank.htm (funny how people don't check the main site... )

The last third of the book is 60 pages of staff interviews. It's a heavy thing. It is, of course, the definitive book on DYRL. However, if you want a greater range and wealth of lineart, especially with less staff interviews, Perfect Memory is the better option: http://www.macrossworld.com/macross/books/series_pm.htm

Actually, if you really cared for Mikimoto's DYRL artwork, you'd get this book: http://www.macrossworld.com/macross/books/dyrl_movie.htm . It basically contains a facsimile selection of production drawings (settei) that were used as keys for the actual cels in the movie. There's some scene and mecha lineart as well, but it mostly focuses on the main trio with a selection of up-close headshots for each.

The Gold Book may be the definitive resource for information, but Macross Settei is definitely the showpiece in terms of character artwork for DYRL.

The following is a selection of non-commodities and/or harder-to-find commodities.

Wow, very impressive veffidas! Super rare!

Did I sell you that Anime Knights Character book? I sold one on here a few years ago but I forgot who to...

Not unless you sold me everything else in that picture! I actually got all 4 of those books as a set.

Veffidas, is it possible to see both side of your doujins please?

akim.

I'll put up pictures of the backs of the books your requested soon, akim. It's possible that I might have had trouble obtaining the "Blue Wind" book, I tend to use a shotgun approach if it seems rare enough.

As for the "Macross Special featured volume 0 " by Art Material, if it contains Flash Back 2012 material, it's probably quite rare indeed. Flash Back 2012 art and material tend to be on the rare side.

Some great stuff in here. I have a small collection of about 10 out of print books from the original series that I picked up at Nakano Mandrake for peanuts (Perfect Memory, TIA series, Graffiti, etc etc).

Someone gave me a 10,000yen tosho card (book voucher for new books). What Macross books originally published in the `80s or based on the original series/DYRL?/Flashback are still in print? Anything?

Anything originally published in the 80's isn't likely to be in print any longer, but you might still find something in bookstores. (The last printing of the Gold Book I know of was in 1992 with the initial one in 1984.)

As for recent stuff that references the original trio and supporting cast, Macross Ace and Macross Chronicles are about it, I believe.

My friend was cleaning out his closet and gave me a copy of This Is Animation - DYRL he would've otherwise chucked. He seems to be good for that (having long ago given me a spare copy of Perfect Memory and a complete set of Zeta Gundam filmbooks with coverart I've never seen before.)

For "Blue Wind" doujin, yes you've shot everybody, me inside....

In this macross Sp.vol.0 book, about Flash Back 2012, there are some layouts, the storyboard ( i keep it somewhere but where...) (few pages); mostly movie and serie macross layouts.

What is strange it's ISBN number...

Question regarding the 2 Macross Perfect Memory Books. Besides the cover art being slightly different colors is there a difference in content between the 2?

They should be exactly the same. One has OUT8 and the other has OUT10. Just different release dates. I believe one came with the huge SDF-1 poster, and the later release didn't come with one. Now there is a bootleg of this book too. So watch out for it!

I'd be wary of repeating the "no poster" rumor associated with the OUT 8 reprint, since the only place that is claimed is on the main MW site and that conflicts with anecdotal information. (See the research I did here.) The MW page also incorrectly lists the initial print date, which can be seen from the dust jacket pictures included on the page, detracting from the accuracy of the information there. Plus, all other reprints of Macross books have included attached posters, notably the Gold Book.

Pretty much the dust jacket and the actual covers have only minor differences while the contents are the same.

From a conversation I had with one of the owners of Book Nippon years ago, they were responsible for importing Macross Perfect Memory Out 8. I was told that they commisioned the poster for their edition only. This would be the second run without Japanese print on the outside and it was created for the import market. I'm not sure how many if any made it to Japan.

I think this is agrees with one of the points you are making Veffidas?
