Kurisama Posted January 21, 2013 Posted January 21, 2013 (edited) And so it begins... This is going to be tricky - a lot more slight curves and subtle surfaces than I first thought - let see how far this goes Edited January 21, 2013 by Kurisama Quote
gwfalcon Posted January 21, 2013 Posted January 21, 2013 Nice starting and hope to get one soon! Quote
Kurisama Posted January 21, 2013 Author Posted January 21, 2013 Thanks fellas! Here is a little more progress - the small laser/bulge is very quick and hacky at the mo - just getting a feel for detail size - and the second pic shows possible movement if I make it adjustable - it can go about 5 degrees further into the head unit to almost hide it - thoughts? Quote
MacrossJunkie Posted January 21, 2013 Posted January 21, 2013 I guess it would depend on how you plan on making the laser adjustable. Although... it's supposed to be static like the YF-21's head laser, right? Maybe it would be better to keep things simple and just leave it static. Quote
Chronocidal Posted January 21, 2013 Posted January 21, 2013 Probably no real chance of that, Shapeways' options for colors are pretty limited. As far as the adjustable laser goes though, while it makes sense that it would move, I don't know if it's worth the extra complexity to do. I'm guessing it'd just be a friction joint that would let you plug it in at a variety of angles, but I wonder how well it would stay in over time. Quote
valhary Posted January 21, 2013 Posted January 21, 2013 man you re killing my wallet you should try a vf 2ss 1/60 Quote

At this point - its going to mighty fiddly to try and get it to move on a single axis swivel - interferes with the screw shaft and I can't move that too much around. I think I may just worry about that last, if at all. Probably no real chance of that, Shapeways' options for colors are pretty limited. You'll need to paint her up! man you re killing my wallet you should try a vf 2ss 1/60 I did buy a 1/100 VF-2SS kit with the intention - but the time is not now So little update; Edited January 22, 2013 by Kurisama Quote
MacrossJunkie Posted January 22, 2013 Posted January 22, 2013 It looks great so far! What's your plan for the visor portion? Are you thinking of having the lower jaw section cover parts of the visor so that the stock visor can be used? Quote
Kurisama Posted January 22, 2013 Author Posted January 22, 2013 The stock visor is glued tight on my copy - so I'm making a new visor, I'll experiment with FUD maybe - I've seen impressive transparency with it, but my main plan is to paint the new visor green and gloss coat it separately and then glue it on. Kurisama Posted January 22, 2013 Author Posted January 22, 2013 A mini update - trying to sneak this in between freelancing! I tapered the laser slightly and added some panel lines - what do you guys reckon? Just to break up the surface a bit. 3/4 Front and back; Aaaand ortho views Quote
David Hingtgen Posted January 22, 2013 Posted January 22, 2013 I like the adjustable idea, but the one on the left bottom looks "too far" retracted. Folding down is good, just not "into" the head. Quote
gwfalcon Posted January 22, 2013 Posted January 22, 2013 Excellent job!! Keep it up and I am in 99% percent (if the price is nice as well ) Quote
Kurisama Posted January 22, 2013 Author Posted January 22, 2013 Sweet Thanks for being a supporter of my wares! I'm certain it'll be cheap - the killer is postage. Every order for me is $25USD... American buyers get a much cheaper rate and I guess Norway and surrounds too? So whenever I order, I make sure I get a bunch of stuff - or wait until I have made a bunch of stuff. But now flicking through Kawamori's design works and the Macross Mecha Manual... I find myself passively designing a partial-dorsal super pack for the 4G... Someone say it'll never work/sell Quote
gwfalcon Posted January 22, 2013 Posted January 22, 2013 (edited) Haha, Gocha! Now 100% in!! Again awesome work and hope to see the commander's face soon! Kurisama Posted January 22, 2013 Author Posted January 22, 2013 Micro update - upper visor cover and sideburn intakes + underside of helm done! Quote
gwfalcon Posted January 22, 2013 Posted January 22, 2013 Yamato should have you as their designer. Fast hand fast leg indeed! Quote
EXO Posted January 22, 2013 Posted January 22, 2013 looks great! Can't wait to see a built one! Quote
EXO Posted January 22, 2013 Posted January 22, 2013 You're in luck because a limited number will be sold again. Quote
Valk009 Posted January 23, 2013 Posted January 23, 2013 Ha, see what "limited edition", the limit is what Yamato says, they are following BaDai's suit, nothing is limited, even the "limited edition"! On the topic of the VF-4G head sculpt, awesome work and interested! Quote
Kurisama Posted January 23, 2013 Author Posted January 23, 2013 Almost done! Just the greeble-ish type box underneath the main head - where the screw goes. Face has had to be squished to fit in the VERY limited space afforded to it. I wont make the small indents on the cheeks - won't show up on the print I think. Enjoy! Quote
Kurisama Posted January 23, 2013 Author Posted January 23, 2013 Well, after triple checking my measurements after the face not looking right - I realized I could stretch it down a millimetre or two; You can see the original on the left and the stretched out on the right of each pic - big difference... Might not look like much of a difference at this same angle, but it'll make a hug difference when viewing it from other angles; Quote
Kicker773 Posted January 23, 2013 Posted January 23, 2013 face reminds me so much of the birdman from zero Quote
Kurisama Posted January 23, 2013 Author Posted January 23, 2013 Yeap - so much! Such a progenitor for many things in the Macross universe - off the top of my head; SV-51, YF-21, Birdman, VF-0S's face, the VF-171's face also to some extent. Wow that was a short list, lol. Quote
Kurisama Posted January 23, 2013 Author Posted January 23, 2013 Made the head guns bigger by 50% cause they were too small when I compared it to the original head at 1:1. Quote
MacrossJunkie Posted January 23, 2013 Posted January 23, 2013 That extra length does make quite a difference. Pretty impressive. Quote
Duymon Posted January 23, 2013 Posted January 23, 2013 This is amazing. If only I didn't have to sacrifice my newborn to get one of these vf-4's lol Quote
gwfalcon Posted January 23, 2013 Posted January 23, 2013 Perfect, Precise, and Pretty!! Some minor comments: 1. Is it possible to come up with two design? One contains 1) face, 2) head guns, and 3) head laser (for those who still want to use orginal head cover) The other contains everything in the pictures. 2. Separate the circle laser so one can use transparent FUV to print it. 3. Make the inside of the face solid so the eye laser can tightly fit in. 4. Generate the plug part behind the face. 5. Possible to modify its ear? Slightly different with the SHE version. Just let me know when it is in your shapeways store and I will buy some. Quote
Jinnai Posted January 23, 2013 Posted January 23, 2013 I am still saddened that this arrived after I left. At least I got to see and play with everything else! Quote
