Going from the top of my head here:

Overall: I found the episode to be more talky, then action. There are some interesting character revelations, and the later time slot didn't assist in my ability to understand chunks of the dialogue.

The pre-opening has changed again. There are more cut scenes from the Deculture Edition. The colony fleets spreading out across the galaxy are back, along with the defold of the transport carrying Sheryl to the Macross 25 fleet.

Azuma turns back just in time to intercept the Red Vajra, and they get into a slug fest. The scene highlights just how dangerous a firing gun pod can be to the spectators in a wrestling match. Luca is ordered to get in the action and fire some shots, but can't get a clear shot. Mikhail moves in, by firing a cable to the ship, and using that to ratchet himself down, between the antenna and other doohickeys on the side, to land. He then opens up his sharpshooter rifle and takes aim - only to spot Alto, Ranka and Sheryl in his sights, on the opposite side of Azuma and the Red Vajra - the three are still inside the park dome, and watching, frozen.

Azuma yells at Mikhail to fire, and he does - taking off the Vajra's head with one shot! Azuma congratulates them on a job well done, and then the Vajra comes twitching and jerking back to life, seriously mauling Azuma's VF in the process. The Super parts are knocked off of his VF, and his cockpit is filled with broken glass and drops of blood for the rest of the scene.

The red Vajra flails around, and smacks the dome over the park. As it starts cracking, and depressurising, Alto looks for an emergency shelter, spots one in the ground nearby, smashes his foot down on the emergency open button, and carries Ranka inside. Sheryl, adjusts her skirt so as not to give a peep show, and jumps in just as the dome begins decompressing.

Mikhail, Luca and Azuma give chase on the red Vajra as it flails and shoots and eventually rockets along the outer rim of the city ship. Azuma grows slowly weaker and weaker. They contact one of the other SMS pilots, and we get our first glimpse of the VB-6 in the background! Eventually the Vajra escapes by folding, and Azuma passes out.

Inside the emergency shelter, Ranka cannot let go of Alto's shirt, despite him repeatedly telling her to let go. She eventually rips her clasped hands off. There is something wrong with the environmental systems. The shelter is getting hotter and hotter. Sheryl strips off her outer wear and just as she is about to sit down, the shelter is rocked by a nearby explosion, and the lights go out as Sheryl falls over Alto. When the lights go one, Ranka goes red faced, and indicates that Sheryl's dress has slipped down. Alto gets a nice eyeful (but us audience members don't.) Sheryl stands up and slaps Alto (2nd time in two episodes! w00t!) She adjusts her dress, and the talk deviates into seeing Sheryl in the nude and juvenile comments between Sheryl and Alto re: who's more perverted. Ranka attempts to make them stop, by offering her bento, which contains to mandu from her restaurant. She opens the lid - and it looks exactly like a pair of breasts! Ranka is emberrassed, and the other two stop fighting.

The environmental systems in the pod continue to degrade, and Sheryl wants out. Alto tries to tell her not to, but she's got a mind of her own, and starts heading up the ladder to open the door out into what the audience is led to believe is a decompressed city dome. Just as she's about to open the door, one of her aids/assistants/a person from the military says something to her through the hatch. The hatch is opened, and they find the dome glass has sealed automatically, and a rescue party their to save them.

They then overhear SMS's transmissions, and Ranka begins freaking out, because Azuma is injured. They see his VF being carried in by Luca and Mikhail, and can actually see Azuma with blood floating in the cockpit. Ranka freaks out and passes out.

Later, Sheryl gets in her limo and says some hot and suggestive comments to Alto. She then says what I think is an invitation to Ranka to join the singing contest, because she likes Ranka's singing voice.

The next day, at the hospital, Azuma's recovered, and Mikhail, Luca and Alto are in the room. They talk, and it leads up to Alto telling Azuma off about not protecting Ranka, and Azuma mentioning a bit about Ranka's history - and there's a little bit more on the scene of the Vajra destroying the ship that Ranka flashed back to in episode one. Azuma eventually overexherts himself, reopens the wound in his arm, and tells Alto to come back in 24 hours if he really wants to know about the Vajra.

Cut to the female NUNS officer in the government building and talking to the SMS rep. who's been seen talking to the Colony President. She mistakenly calls him by his first name, and he says it's now 10:00:30, 30 seconds after he's become a civilian again (ie: his job's finished). He stands up, moves in, licks her lips, and starts kissing her. She protests, but I think it's the kind of where people protest, but really don't want you to stop.

Later, Alto goes wandering the city, replaying events and muttering to himself. He eventually finds himself at the top of a hill, in a scene somewhat reminiscient of Macross Plus. Ranka is nearby, and he overhears her singing something that reminds me of Voices. They talk, and she mentions that she cannot remember anything about her youth, except the song (which is not English, Japanese, nor French. Zentraedi? Protoculutre? Another Yokko Kanno creation?) She says that she sings there because there's no one there to hear. He says she has a good voice and people should listen to it. Encouraged, she gets him to listen to the song, as she's planning to use it in the contest that she was invited to by Sheryl.

Later (next day?), we see our first Macross graveyard AND funeral. There are two ongoing at the same time - one looks straight out of your typical American war movie (Arlington National cemetary?), and the other, well, I didn't quite understand the scene, but it looked like the SMS crew burrying one of their own, in a way that I felt was "send the corpse to the recyclers, so it will give us life through his death." Not sure how he's going to be recycled... soylent green, anyone?

Alto meets up with Azuma, and the continue talking, implying a busy day tomorrow. Ranka is last spotted sitting in front of a row of judges, introducing herself on live TV, and preparing to sing. Sheryl looks on (I think she's watching on tv in a different room) and giving encouragement.

The preview for the next episode has what looks like Alto undergoing training (part of it over a Zentraedi ship - though it could just be the hull of a city ship) and Ranka heading out onto stage in a swim suit.

All in all, a good episode, with a lot going on. Some great character developments as well.

Given the amount of action in the previous two episodes, I was a bit disappointed that the volume of it was reduced significantly. Though that is to be expected. We're only at the third episode afterall.

Technically, I felt that the frame speed when they were moving around in the VFs was a bit too high, and sometime the background/foreground elements looked a bit jerky and not fluidly moving. I'm still not quite liking the character designs. They serve their purposes of course, but they are just missing that extra something that the ones in SDF:M, Plus, 7 and Zero have. Though, I'm pretty sure that I'll probably start liking them sooner or later. And I'm sure that their gawky poses and movements are a reflection of their youthful ages. Right?

Well, let's remember that Macross is as much a story and space opera as it is an action show so it's going to happen. A nice balance is preferred for a great show. ^_^

Ahh.. couple more observations:

Ranka's hair continues to move in gravity and wind condition defying ways.

The eye catch is different (though, I can't quite remember the one from last week...)

The city looks great - this episode looks different from one (definite Tokyo feel) and two (definite San Franscisco feel.) Yes, there were streetcars and lots of neon TV billboards, but we got to see the mountains around the city (City 25 is a HUGE ship!), and the mountains had a definite Japan mountain feel (watch EVA to get a rough idea. I'm not talking Japan Alps mountains here.)

To those who have read the manga, Sheryl tells Alto not to spread her having flashed him on the net, although:

Sheryl: Oh, I'll allow you to use that memory tonight.

After Alto's reaction:

Sheryl: Idiot, like I'd actually allow that.

Another great epsode, can't wait for the sub to fill in some more of Ranka's background. Classic moment,

when they are in the mini-shelter, an explosion knocks Sheryl over, causing her to crack Alto across the face. When she gets up, her top is down, showing off her goodies (to them, not to us). She grins at Alto, before giving him a second crack across the face!

There's a real Plus vibe to this episode.
